How To Access Software:

  1. Before proceeding, students must read all information on the Software Info page
(go to www.goldenwestcollege.edu/cs  then click on Software Info
    .)

  2. Your email address will be collected in class, after which in a few days you will receive a Welcome Email from e-academy.com informing you about your unique username and password (these are different from your login info in the computer labs) and a link you can log on to (http://msdn06.e-academy.com/gwc_csc) so you could download select software straight to your home computer. One download restricted per software per student. If you do not receive an email from e-academy.com four business days after your email was collected, please notify [email protected].

  3. After receiving your login info via email, click on the supplied link in the email to log on. The logon page looks like below. Enter your username and password, click Log Me In.

4.  Click Software on top menu, then on drop down menu, select the software you will be using for your class.  For example, to download Visual Studio, select Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition CD1:

5. Take note of the Download Time shown on the page depending on your internet connection.  (Download time too long? You can get the CDs here! (just pay e-academy's shipping/handling).  To still proceed with the download, click Add To Cart:

6. Click Download.

7.  At this point you are NOT downloading the actual software yet.  A filename that ends in .exe will be downloaded to your computer.  This is the Downloader file (the program that does the real download). You must click on SAVE. This will save the Downloader file to your local hard drive. This is important so that you can resume a download if it fails to complete for any reason.

8. Save the Downloader file anywhere on your hard drive. In this example, it is saved in My Documents folder.  Take note of the default file name below (VS_Net_2005_Pro_Downloader). Click Save.

9. The Downloader file (404 kb) should take less than 2 minutes to download depending on your connection.  Next, go to the location where you saved the Downloader file.  In our example, it is in My Documents folder. Double-click on VS_Net_2005_Pro_Downloader to run it.

10. You are now ready to download the actual software. Select any destination on your local drive. In this example, it is C:\Temp. Click Resume.

11. The download of the actual software has begun.  You can track the progress on the bottom status bar (in red circle below.) The average size of the file is 575MB (that's about 1 hour and 16 minutes of download time if you have cable/DSL internet, or about 17 hours if you have dial-up (56k).  (Again if you'd rather just get the CD's, see step # 5 above.)

*** If at this point you encounter an error then:
a. Close the window by clicking on the X on top-rightmost of the window.
b. Double-click on
VS_Net_2005_Pro_Downloader to restart it.
c. Click on Resume (it replaces the Continue button.)

12. IMPORTANT!  After download has completed, DO NOT CLICK Launch Install.  You are not ready to install Visual Studio yet because you still have to download CD #2.  Just close the window by clicking on the X on top-rightmost of the window.

13.  Check for the file on C:\Temp (or wherever you saved the file).  Note the file ends in .iso and is approximately 613MB or 613,000 KB.  You now have in ISO image of disk #1.  (What's an ISO file? Click here and read #2 of Frequently Asked Questions.)

14. Next, you will need to download disk #2. Repeat steps 4--8, but choose Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition CD2.  When you reach step 8, click Save. You will get:

15. Click Yes (we want to replace the VS_Net_2005_Pro_Downloader of CD1 with CD2.)  Proceed with step 9--13 above.  After the download, you now have the ISO image for both CD #1 and #2.

*** Please note: The Visual Studio 2005 Pro CD1 & CD2 discs contain the Visual Studio program install files while the MSDN Library CD1, CD2, CD3 discs contain the Visual Studio Help and Example files. The 3 MSDN Library CDs are optional.  You can access the same information contained in them at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library but this does not give you the F1 context help (what's this?).  If you don't want this, then all you need are the Visual Studio 2005 Pro CD1 & CD2.

However, if you would also like to have the F1 context help, then you can also download the 3 MSDN Library disks.  Repeat steps 4--15 above and select the appropriate software from the menu.  Note that you should install Visual Studio 2005 (CD#1 and 2) first before the MSDN Library (CD1, 2 & 3.)

16.  After all the downloads, you have 2 options for your ISO files: you can either extract/unpack them, or burn each file to a CD separately.  How? Click here and read #3 of Frequently Asked Questions.
